Grades and Exams

As the season of exams is gearing up I decided to write this post.

The reason why students in our country are reluctant to learn is because we value marks more than we  value learning.

We are told from a very small age that we have to score good marks. Parents are more interested in marks of their children as they form a social status of the family. Moreover these marks are used as a basis to compete with other children in the neighborhood. At the end of the day no one values learning. Our education board also supports this attitude. When students go to higher classes they are taught "how to score good marks?". All this has resulted in an obsolete and weak generation but this is not their fault they were made like this by their parents and education system.

The children grow up thinking they have no intrinsic value(do they?). I mean since they were small they  were given gifts if they scored well and punished if they scored low marks. So where's the value for the child? Parents have value for their marks not their child. As I said marks form social status. If a student decides to pursue arts or commerce he is deemed as stupid. Learning in any form, course is great, but we have graded these courses too.
I think students should be learning oriented. After all learning about a specific subject is in their domain. Marks are not in their domain. Parents should motivate their students to be learning oriented.
