Enhancing relevance of commerce education

Garware college of commerce is holding a national symposium for industry experts, academicians, researchers, and students who expect change.

What comes in our mind when we think of commerce faculty? Mediocre job, less salary, laputan syllabus. The syllabus doesn't meet the demands of students neither the expectations of companies. All these factors indicate that something needs to change. This is dark hour in the history of Indian education. But as they say the darkest hour came just before the dawn. Garware college of commerce has come up with an initiative that will change the course of history. It will invoke a revolution in the field of Indian education. It is a once in a life time Symposium. These type of events don't occur frequently but when they do they prove to be a catalyst to a revolution. It is a 3 way interaction between students, company personnel and faculties. Together they promise to come up with an idea of enhancing the relevance of commerce education.

As I said it is a symposium that happens once in the course of our lives. I've registered! So what are you waiting for? Will you witness history or be a part of it!

Carles Puyol

My tribute to The Wall

Wearing a half-sleeve jersey even on the coldest champions league away night, screaming at the top of his voice, giving nightmares to strikers even when they were in their prime and blasting speed that would take your breath away , that was what Puyol was.

Puyol has played for Barca for 20 years if you also count his youth days at the club. All these years some thing besides values like commitment, hard work and passion has been an integral part of  Puyol’s career and that is his hairstyle. He hasn’t changed it up till now. It is a reason that contributed to fans calling him “Tarzan” or “Caveman”. Although it was just a small part the main contribution to the names was his heroics and constant runs on the right wing. Before turning into a solid centre back Puyol was a right back, and before that in the youth team he played as right winger, but when he came in the senior team under Louis Van Gaal he started playing as a right back.

Puyol is famous as “Braveheart” not only among Barca fans but also among football fans for his commitment, hard work, dedication and passion. He discredited the notion that only strikers take all the credit. Everyone remembers the 2010 World Cup semi-final against Germany where Puyol rose above Pique and headed the ball into goal through a box full of German defenders to send Spain cruising into final. One of the fondest memories of all the Cules is the save by Puyol against Lokomotiv in 2002, the goal keeper was not in the box, the goal was open, it was certain that the striker would score goal the striker himself was sure about this but only to his dismay as Puyol saved the goal using his chest. The ball actually seemed to hit the crest on his jersey and bounced to safety. As expected, Camp Nou was applauding and celebrating as if it was a goal, to be truthful it was nonetheless than one.

Puyol is famous for keeping the squad together. No matter what the score is, even if Bacra is leading by 3 goals he will shout at the top of his voice on a player who would lose focus. He was never complacent. He always gave his best no matter what the situation.

Most of all beyond being a great player, Puyol was humble. Many fans like to call him “Lionheart”. He stopped Thiago and Alves form celebrating against Rayo as it was insulting to the opposition. He let Abidal pick up the European Cup in his place in 2012 as the defender had returned from Cancer problems. He let Tito and Abidal lift the La liga cup in 2013 as both of them had returned from cancer treatments. He is the only captain to have lifted all major trophies in a year that his team has played for, lifting 6 trophies in 2008-09 season under Guardiola.

Puyol was an integral part of Barca. It will be difficult for the club to fill the void that he leaves behind, but it will be more intricate for the fans who are so used to see their captain fantastic on the pitch giving his best all the time.

Fear

No person in this world is fearless. Everyone is afraid of something. Some people are afraid of circumstances, some are afraid of other people and it goes on.
But, many times in our life we come across people who are fearless. What is their secret? Is it a god given gift. Well no, they understand something about fear. They understand that we experience many feelings and all of these feelings have messages. Like wise fear is also a feeling and it give us a message. It is simply the anticipation that something that's going to happen soon needs to prepared for. In simple words Be prepared! The problem is we try to deny fear or wallow in it. In any way we are not trying to respect the message that fear is giving us and if we don't listen to the message that it is giving, it will amplify.

So whenever the next time you are afraid of anything don't hide the feeling cause hiding will not make it better. Get excited cause you've already been told to prepare. Confront the feeling of fear, thank it for warning you to be prepared and to face whatever that is troubling you.

Grades and Exams

As the season of exams is gearing up I decided to write this post.

The reason why students in our country are reluctant to learn is because we value marks more than we  value learning.

We are told from a very small age that we have to score good marks. Parents are more interested in marks of their children as they form a social status of the family. Moreover these marks are used as a basis to compete with other children in the neighborhood. At the end of the day no one values learning. Our education board also supports this attitude. When students go to higher classes they are taught "how to score good marks?". All this has resulted in an obsolete and weak generation but this is not their fault they were made like this by their parents and education system.

The children grow up thinking they have no intrinsic value(do they?). I mean since they were small they  were given gifts if they scored well and punished if they scored low marks. So where's the value for the child? Parents have value for their marks not their child. As I said marks form social status. If a student decides to pursue arts or commerce he is deemed as stupid. Learning in any form, course is great, but we have graded these courses too.
I think students should be learning oriented. After all learning about a specific subject is in their domain. Marks are not in their domain. Parents should motivate their students to be learning oriented.

Why i like Messi?

Why I like Messi?
I am often asked this question .Well this is how it begins. I started supporting Barca in 2006. It was fifa that made me aware of a team called Barcelona albeit it wasn't fifa 06 it was fifa 99. The likes of Rivaldo, Figo, Guardiola, luis enrique made me a Barca fan.I was told about Messi by my friend Jeet Desai.
After Jeet told me about Messi, I started watching the little magician closely. These are my observations: Messi represents values like humility, responsibility, innocence & child like enthusiasm for what he does. These are the qualities I would like to emulate, his two qualities that impress me the most are that: he always puts his team before him and he doesn't need external factors to motivate him. He doesn't need to compete with Ronaldo to motivate himself. He loves football and that is all he needs. This is a quality of his that has worked wonders for him. As long as he has a ball at his feet he will be happy he doesn't need trophies and this is evident from the genuine smile Messi had on his face when Ronaldo won the ballon d'or

Football fans are infamous for arguing on "Who is the best player in the world?". One day my friend and I were arguing on the same topic (My friend is a Ronaldo fan). So my friend said "Ronaldo has great height, good physique, fantastic free kicks, scorching penalties, awesome long shots, great speed. Physically he is two times better than Messi. To be truthful my friend was correct, but that day I learnt one more quality of Messi and that was " your I-can is more important than your physical or mental ability". After learning of this quality of Messi my respect for him increased to an even higher level.

Concluding this topic all I have to say is that when boys reach adolescence they usually find themselves lost in life. This is the stage when they need a role model. I was in the same stage and I had started developing notions like the "World is very bad and if you want to win you have to be wicked", but when I saw Messi I had a paradigm shift and I came out of the miserable state I was in. I am truly grateful to the "little magician" for that and this is the reason why I like Messi so much.
